October Early Childhood Network Meeting:
Topic: Working With Teacher Assistants
Some positive thoughts on how to establish a good team relationship between teachers and teacher assistants:
· Give them freedom in certain areas within the classroom with regards to prepping materials or working with students
· Bring assistants into the planning so the plans are transparent and easily supported
· Create an environment of mutual respect
· Get their input with regards to planning or things they have noticed in the room that affect behaviors, lessons, etc.
· Communication is key to success
· Know the difference between a working relationship vs a boss/employee relationship – work as a team
· It’s helpful to have similar teaching styles
We also talked about issues and frustrations
· Many times qualified aides are pulled from early childhood classrooms to substitute teach in other classrooms. This often disrupts the consistency and ease of day
o Meet with administration to verbalize the issue, offer solutions and support
We concluded our meeting by sharing ideas on how do you find aides/assistants
o Families from your school
o Tuition reduction or paid hourly
