Preschool of the Month: Immanuel, Crystal Lake

Our November meeting was held at Immanuel Lutheran School in Crystal Lake.  The topic for our meeting was geared towards reading aloud.  We were blessed to have literacy consultant from Crossland Literacy, Beth Olsen, present on "The Power of Reading Aloud."

Administrators, please share this information with your preschool teachers. We gained a great deal of information and resources that would be useful for the preschool-age child and classroom.

If you have further question for Beth Olsen or would like for her to present to your staff she can be contacted at the following email address: beth@crosslandlit.com.

A few read aloud resources:
-IRA (International Reading Association)
-The Center for Improvement of Early Reading Achievement
-ALA (American Library Association)
-Reading is Fundamental

Below are a few handouts from Beth.

THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENT IS THE POWERPOINT IN WHICH BETH SHARED ENTITLED: "The Power of Reading Aloud."  Please share with your staff.

Information from your Early Childhood Consultants for the Northern Illinois District, Melissa Smith and Julie Klope:
Last weekend, I attended a conference in the South Wisconsin district regarding a program for teachers called C-LECT (Certification in Lutheran Early Childhood Teaching).  We, along with Mike Zimmer, are looking to adopt some sort of certification program in our district.  Julie and I would put the programming together, but we need your feedback!
In a brief summary, this program would be designed for those preschool teaching staff who are not (or are) synodically trained in the doctrine of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.  We envision putting this event together for smaller regions of schools throughout our district.  The program will offer basic theology "101" training, appropriately integrating the faith into the classroom setting, as well as hands-on activities and sharing (which may include make-and-take projects or other resources.).
I cannot express enough, the importance of our job as administrators to make sure that the teachers working with our preschool students in the Lutheran School are teaching sound theology.  We would like to see this as a whole-faculty opportunity for learning.  Obviously, there are many more details which need to be presented, but this provides you with some basic information.

Please email me at msmithparkridge@gmail.com if you have further questions or are interested in this certification for your preschool teaching staff.
